by Bob Augustin Jr.

 Aug 8 program

Brenda Fisher Burns, Lawrence County Coordinator of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, was the guest speaker at the August 8, 2008 meeting of the Lawrenceburg Rotary Club.  Burns was promoting the annual Relay for Life fundraiser and celebration being held in Rotary Park on August 9.  Opening ceremonies begin at 6:00 PM Saturday and continue through the night concluding with breakfast 6:00 AM Sunday morining.

Burns informed the club that 556,000 people in the United States will die of cancer in  2008.  In addition, one of two men and one and three women will be diagnosed with cancer.  Locally, forty teams have participated in the fundraising for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.  In 2007, the teams raised approximately $86,000 dollars.  The funds raised will be for research to find a cure for cancer and public education.
